特殊时代的特殊相遇
早在2003年，这张后来定名为《潜流》的作品辑里的部分歌曲就已经成型了，那时候张亚东就开始有出一张个人专辑的打算，之后的六年，音乐产业发生了翻天覆地的变化，传统唱片迅速式微，数字音乐从概念到现实，逐渐主宰了这个纷乱的时代。这期间，张亚东这个名字已经成为华语乐坛的金字招牌，两岸三地的歌手对他趋之若鹜，他也创建了自己的独立厂牌，变身成为多栖幕后，而这张作品辑却因推出时间的一再顺延而几乎成为传说，音乐旨趣的变迁，分身乏术的忙碌，对制作近乎苛刻的自我要求，都是这位对完美孜孜以求的双鱼给出的理由，但是无论如何，他终于在2009年的年初交出了这张孕育了六载的《潜流》，有意思的是，这位屡次缔造传统唱片销售奇迹的幕后圣手，在自己推出生涯最重要作品的时候，适逢数字音乐时代的大动作——中国移动第一次将一张内地专辑作为无线音乐首发专辑进行大规模推广，一位在自己的专辑里几乎不发声的音乐制作人，一张并不顾忌市场的完全个人化作品，得到如此待遇，在这个特殊的时代里，实在是一件奇妙的事情。

华语乐坛第一张“制作人专辑”
1998年，张亚东曾在香港发行过一张个人同名专辑，但是因为从未在内地出版过，除了少数死忠独立乐迷的收藏，听者寥寥，因此连他自己都将《潜流》视为真正意义上的首张专辑，而和前述专辑不同的是，自称并不擅歌唱的张亚东此番惜声如金，在按照自己的情感和理念构筑了整张专辑音乐的同时，先后邀请了包括王菲、坂本美雨、Angela Harry、Heidi Myllyla、田原、朴树、莫文蔚等来自不同国度和地区的歌手助阵，在这张专辑里，声音的功能超越了歌手们的知名度，他们多姿多彩的歌声象精巧的乐器被张亚东安排在自己的音乐织体中，共同完成了一张绝对张亚东个人风格的作品辑，在华语音乐的历史中，这样的专辑非常罕见，它更接近于欧美的所谓“制作人专辑”，一如Air的《Moon Safari》、The Chemical Brothers的《Surrender》或Zero7的《Simple Things》。

一个人内心的《潜流》
在华语乐坛，张亚东一直被认为是最具前瞻性和国际化视野的音乐制作人，他的敏锐触觉和卓绝品味保证了他在踏入流行音乐界十几年的时间里始终走在音乐潮流的尖端，同时也有“另类”、“不商业”之类的字眼常伴左右，他一边坚持着自己的趣味和品质，一边小心翼翼的寻找着与制作目标契合的平衡点，也时常为此困扰，于是，做完全属于自己的作品辑成为了他表达内心真实情感的一种最具能量的方式。他坚持用《潜流》这个低调甚至有些晦暗的词语来命名这张专辑，是因为这些作品是他内心深处情感涌动的结果，他执拗的用他最擅长的静态美学来对抗周遭的喧嚣和躁动，并期望在潜沉的音符中得到慰藉，窥见光明。为此，他选择了完全跳脱华语音乐市场藩篱的形式，用混合着古典、爵士、电子、民谣的语言，将带有回忆感的复古音色与极具未来感的简约结构巧妙缝合，并选择最能与这些音符产生鸣响的词作和歌者，于是，我们在《我爱你》中得到王菲最极致的呓语，在《世界尽头》中触碰到朴树最伤感的灵魂，在《50 Seconds From Now》中体味到田原最冷静的叙述，在《密流》中听到莫文蔚最黯然的呢喃……。

潜流，也是高峰
我们还是不能免俗地将《潜流》称为华语流行乐坛最重要的出品，甚至提前将这张呈现特殊风貌的专辑划入经典行列，不仅是因为张亚东在二十年内地流行音乐史上毋庸置疑的地位，更因为《潜流》是一张真正在音乐语汇和制作水准上达到国际化的专辑，张亚东完全凭个人的才华将华语音乐带到了一个前所未有的高度和境界，这位甚至被时尚界关注的音乐达人奉献了超越这个娱乐时代的沉甸甸的作品，在低回唯美的旋律和简洁动人的词藻中闪烁的是诚意和理想的点点光芒。
